State University of New York Upstate Medical University
SUNY Upstate Medical University is Central New York's only academic medical university and is one of 125 in the country. With four colleges (Medicine, Health Professions, Nursing and Graduate Studies), a thriving biomedical research enterprise and a Level 1 trauma center and tertiary care hospital, "Upstate" is the region's largest employer. In 2009, it will open the Golisano Children's Hospital as part of its University Hospital.
Upstate's predecessor was Geneva Medical College which was formed in 1834, and was noted for graduating the country's first woman physician, Elizabeth Blackwell, in 1849. It became the Syracuse University School of Medicine in 1871 and in 1950 was absorbed into the State University of New York system, the largest public system of higher education in the US.
